We joined Codeberg e.V.
By Federico Leva
One of the purposes of Majavan tila osk is to develop the commons, such as Free Software. We are therefore very happy to announce that we have officially joined the association Codeberg e.V..
What we use Codeberg for
Our use of Codeberg started very simple. We needed a version control system to keep track of changes to our drafts of bylaws (which were rather complex). Codeberg was a natural choice, because it is a very effective and accessible host for git repositories.
Later we’ve also started using Codeberg Pages to host our website. Together with our domain host (OVH), and by reusing our previous experience with Hugo, Codeberg Pages allowed us to bring up a basic website in an afternoon, on a rush, without having to pay anything (our cooperative wasn’t registered yet) and without having to send our visitors’ personal data to some USA provider.
Despite some growth pains in the past few months, we couldn’t be happier of the service, and we feel compelled to give back. For now we have joined as supporting members and we are not planning to be very active in the association. We are open to ideas on what else we could do to contribute: contact us if you have some! (Especially if you think you could pursue your idea yourself as a member of our cooperative.)
Why we like Codeberg
Codeberg is a fully freedom-respecting and privacy-friendly project based in the European Union. Codeberg is run by volunteers, but it still manages to have their own physical machines on which to run practically all of their services without relying on big tech and other tentacles of surveillance capitalism.
Clearly Codeberg people are doing something right, because they’ve been under attack from intolerant forces. Codeberg stood strong and made us even more proud of sharing this journey with them. The capital of Majavan tila osk is majority queer and we exist to support minorities through mutual aid.
It is not possible to pursue prosocial purposes like the defense of the knowledge commons when using centralised proprietary services like GitHub, which are intrinsically oppressive. On this see Free Software Needs Free Tools by Benjamin Mako Hill and Give Up GitHub by Denver Gingerich and Bradley M. Kuhn.
We strongly recommend everyone who cares about the public good to join us on Codeberg or another Forgejo instance. Domain providers like OVH can also host static websites for a small additional fee, you don’t need to host your website with the same host as your version control.
